Spam email purporting to be a “critical update” for Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express contains a link to download a malicious program that can steal personal information from a user’s computer, including login credentials and credit card information, Trend Micro reported June 22.
The spammers use legitimate links to Microsoft sites in the email body to make the email appear genuine, but a link appearing to direct users to a Microsoft site for the “update” actually downloads a Trojan horse called ZBot.
Microsoft just announced that it is seeking to purchase Yahoo, stating that it missed the search engine market top position against Google for over a year now. If the deal goes through, Microsoft will own Zimbra, a direct competitor to Outlook and Exchange. It is unknown if Microsoft will dump Zimbra or continue to support it. Zimbra is Open Source code, meaning anyone can see/play with the program supporting it and customize it.
Outlook syncs with Zimbra and Zimbra works on a Mac (that’s not the same thing as saying that Outlook can run on a Mac).
If Microsoft decides to dump Zimbra, that will give them an added boost to controlling the email market with Outlook. If they keep Zimbra they will likely improve compatibility with Outlook which will tighten PC/Mac interfaces.
Personal Opinion: I’ve never used Zimbra nor do I know anyone who does. However, if you search zimbra as a keyword on Yahoo it appears on about 4 million pages. (http://www.zimbra.com/products/desktop_compatibility.html)
I was reading about latest issue with Entourage 2008. It is now unsupported with Hosted Exchange. That’s bad for Entourage users wanting to have their contacts and calendars shared across multiple machines or between themselves and their virtual assistants. I called my local Hosted Exchange provider who confirmed it…they dropped support for Entourage 2008.
Apparently the key synchronizing mechanism between Entourage 2008 and Hosted Exchange is now missing–MAPI (Messaging API) . So Entourage users are now are going to find it more difficult than ever to share contacts and calendars. I don’t think this was political. I think it’s just very difficult to connect MAPI to MAC’s. Microsoft will keep working on the problem, so maybe the Entourage 2010 will have the answer.
